Fort Worth City Council Appoints Advisory Committee to Review Feasibility of
an Urban Street Car (trolley) System

Mayor Mike Moncrief and the city council have appointed a 15 person
committee to review the feasibility of an urban street car system in Fort Worth.  The committee will undertake these tasks:

  • Review Fort Worth's previous streetcar studies;

  • Review light rail and streetcar systems in peer cities;

  • Conduct a preliminary assessment of costs and benefits, including
    potential funding sources; and

  • Determine if a streetcar or light rail system is worth pursuing at this
    time.

iI the committee determines an urban street car system is feasible and
desirable, it will undertake the following actions:

  • Identify the starter corridor;

  • Identify potential funding sources and prepare a preliminary funding
    strategy; and

  • Identify next steps for implementation

The committee is being chaired by Downtown Fort Worth Inc. head Andy Taft. Greater Fort Worth Real Estate Council board members Ed Casebier and Phillip Poole were appointed to the Committee by Mayor Moncrief.  GFWREC member Jeff Davis was appointed by District 9 Councilman Joel Burns.

The Committee began meeting last week and has taken a rail tour in Dallas.
As they continue their work we will keep you informed.  If you have any questions, I would encourage you to contact Ed, Phillip or Jeff.

Discussions Continue on Regional Rail and Transit

Not many headlines lately on regional rail efforts, but don't give up hope.
Elected officials from throughout the Metroplex have continued discussing a regional effort aimed at 2009 state legislative approval for funding a light rail system.  It appears the local governments have agreed to work together in pursuit of legislative approval.  What will remain an open question for now is what funding streams will be requested from the legislature.  More information will be passed along as it is known.

This is an important issue for the GFWREC.  We are on public record strongly
supporting a regional rail system.  From the looks of things, this is going to be a big, big issue throughout 2009 and beyond.

What's changed to make this a big issue?  Simple ... the price of gasoline. And the spike in gas prices has led to significant public support for funding a regional rail system.  A case in point is the City's "Let's Talk Fort Worth" town hall meetings.  Several of these meetings have taken place throughout various parts of town.  The number one request from citizens is regional rail.  And we are told it is far and away the number one issue.

It may be now or never for regional rail in the Metroplex.  Stay tuned.

Your Insight on Fort Worth Transportation Impact Fee is Requested

The Fort Worth Transportation Impact Fee went into effect July 1st.  Even
though the fee is not as onerous as once proposed, it none-the-less will impact many projects.

The GFWREC will be closely monitoring the impact fee implementation during the next year and plans to visit with city council members and the city manager next July, on the one year anniversary.  Please contact any GFWREC Board Member or Executive Director, Karen Vermaire Fox, if you have comments or concerns about the fee and its implementation.  Your stories and input are needed and will be carried forward next July.

We were at the table throughout the impact fee debate and had significant success.  But we haven't left the table.  Our goals next year are to ensure the impact fee revenues are being used for transportation infrastructure (as required) and to see that any needed improvements in the ordinance are enacted.  Give us your insight.
